“Canadian Researchers Shine in Global Ecological Image Competition”

Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos taken by researchers from around the world at different stages of their careers. These captivating images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural landscapes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” On the other hand, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, clinched the category titled “protecting our planet” with his image titled “A bridge between past and present.”

For researchers, images serve as a means to document their work and offer a glimpse into the world of science. According to Brennan, these images play a crucial role in building public trust, highlighting the importance of environmental education and ecological research.

Brennan captured his winning photo, “Intertidal education,” while overseeing undergraduate students conducting a long-term fish monitoring project in St. Andrews, N.B. The image showcases the students examining coastal fish species under the moonlight, emphasizing their curiosity and dedication to their research. The challenging environment of the Bay of Fundy, known for its extreme tides, added an extra layer of complexity to the photo shoot.

Tian’s winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” is a compilation of 33 drone photos depicting the Long Sault Parkway, which connects 11 islands in the upper St. Lawrence River. This unique perspective offers a comprehensive view of the ecosystem, showcasing the impact of human activities on the region’s natural beauty.

Both Brennan and Tian believe that sharing their research through images can inspire meaningful change by emphasizing the significance of ecological studies and scientific communication. They assert that photography plays a crucial role in fostering empathy towards the environment and raising awareness about conservation efforts.

The BMC Ecology and Zoology competition also recognized other outstanding photographers, including Sritam Kumar Sethy, Ryan Wagner, Victor Huertas, Alwin Hardenbol, Brandon Güell, and Abhijeet Bayani, for their captivating images that shed light on various aspects of nature and wildlife conservation. These images not only showcase the beauty of the natural world but also highlight the importance of preserving and protecting our ecosystems for future generations.
