“Son Accused of Parents’ Murder Denied $1.5M Trust Fund”

Nick Reiner, accused of the murder of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been refused access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he sought for his legal defense. Reiner had been attempting to claim allegedly unpaid funds from a trust established by his parents in 1993.

Trustees, as per court documents obtained by CBC News, declined Reiner’s request based on the “slayer statute” in California law. This statute prohibits individuals who have “feloniously and intentionally” killed someone from inheriting money, property, or trusts from the deceased. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife were fatally stabbed in their California residence on December 14, 2025, leading to the arrest of their son, Nick Reiner.

Nick Reiner, aged 32, faces murder charges following an indictment by a Los Angeles County grand jury, alleging that he ambushed his parents. The severity of the circumstances could potentially result in the death penalty, though the District Attorney has not confirmed this intention.

Scheduled for a pretrial hearing in September, Nick Reiner currently retains public defender Kimberly Greene for legal representation. The filing in June disclosed that smaller individual trust funds were set up for the Reiner children, with Nick entitled to a portion at specific ages. However, he claimed in a petition that he had not received the funds due to him, emphasizing his right to a fair defense.

High-profile attorney Alan Jackson initially represented Reiner but departed without explanation. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal expenses but later withdrew their support. Jackson expressed willingness to return to the case if the necessary funds were available.

Legal representatives handling the trust fund stipulated that the funds could not be disbursed until the outcome of the criminal case against Reiner was determined. Uncertainties persist around the case, with no official motives disclosed by authorities even eight months post the tragic incident. Jake Reiner, the eldest son, shared his emotional turmoil over the loss of his parents and the legal spotlight on his brother.

Rob Reiner, known for his extensive contributions to the film industry, had a successful career directing iconic movies like “The Princess Bride” and “A Few Good Men.” His enduring marriage with Michele, whom he met during the filming of “When Harry Met Sally,” spanned 36 years.
