Three security personnel at a nightclub in downtown Winnipeg are facing charges of assault following an incident that left a Winnipeg Sea Bears player with serious injuries earlier this month, according to authorities.
The player, Teddy Allen, was assaulted at the nightclub during the early hours of August 3, as reported by the Canadian Elite Basketball League team. The three individuals, aged 35, 37, and 58, who were employed at the venue, were taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with assault causing bodily harm. They have since been released on undertakings.
Although the nightclub’s identity was not disclosed by the police, it was revealed to be located on Main Street, between Portage and William avenues. Allen, who has undergone medical evaluations and received a diagnosis, is currently recuperating at home, as stated in a team-released written communication on Thursday.
Expressing his thoughts on the incident, Allen emphasized that such acts of assault should never occur, reiterating his resilience by stating, “When I’ve been knocked down, I get back up, which is exactly what I’m going to do now.”
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information or footage, such as dashcam or cellphone videos from around the time of the incident, to contact the Winnipeg police major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or online.
CBC News has sought a response from the Sea Bears regarding the incident.
