Bill Hagerty, a former Fleet Street editor and distinguished Mirror executive, has passed away at the age of 86. In 2023, he was honored with the title of Journalist Laureate for his outstanding contributions to the industry.
Born on St George’s Day in Ilford, East London in 1939, Bill defied his headmaster’s advice at Beal Grammar School to pursue a career in journalism. Starting at the young age of 16 with the Walthamstow Post, he went on to work for Reynolds News, which later transformed into the Sunday Citizen in 1962.
During his tenure as the showbusiness editor of the Daily Mirror, Bill had the opportunity to interview numerous renowned personalities, including John Wayne, Richard Burton, Michael Caine, and Joan Collins, among others. His exceptional reporting skills were recognized and supported by the esteemed former editor, Lord Cudlipp.
Having served as an editor for Fleet Street newspapers such as Sunday Today and The People, as well as acting editor of the Daily Mirror, Bill’s influence extended to editing the diaries of Alastair Campbell, former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s press secretary.
Bill’s contributions to the British media were also notable, with two published books and his involvement in the British Journalism Review. In his own words at the 2023 London Press Club awards, Bill reflected on his long career in journalism, highlighting his enduring passion for the profession.
Described as a veteran of journalism, Bill was remembered fondly by colleagues and peers for his wisdom, humor, and dedication to press freedom. Survived by his wife Liz, who also worked as a journalist for the Mirror, Bill leaves behind a legacy cherished by his children, grandchildren, and the journalism community at large.
