Hansard tragically passed away during the Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The eight-year-old horse, trained by Gary and Josh Moore, faced an unfortunate injury leading to his withdrawal from the race.
The Jockey Club confirmed the sad news, stating that Hansard suffered a fatal injury during the second race of the day. Veterinary professionals promptly attended to him, determining that euthanasia was the most humane decision for the horse’s well-being.
In the same event, Kargese, trained by Willie Mullins, emerged victorious in the Arkle Chase at 2pm. Jockey Danny Mullins expressed his joy at the win, praising the horse’s performance and acknowledging the teamwork with Willie Mullins.
Despite the inherent risks in horse racing, The Jockey Club remains dedicated to minimizing these risks at its events. The racing industry has invested significantly in equine welfare, amounting to over £63 million since 2000. Moreover, the Horse Welfare Board, an independent body, has implemented strategic measures to enhance horse welfare standards.

With over five million attendees in 2025, horse racing continues to be a highly popular sport in the UK, second only to football in terms of attendance.
