A recent tragic incident at a Swiss ski resort has brought to light concerning safety oversights. The foam soundproofing tiles in the bar where 40 individuals lost their lives had not undergone safety testing for six years, according to local officials.
The mayor of Crans-Montana, Nicolas Feraud, disclosed that no safety inspections had occurred at the Le Constellation bar since 2019. The interior of the bar was adorned with soundproofing panels on the ceiling, which are suspected to have ignited from sparklers near them.
Authorities are now investigating whether the soundproofing material and the use of candles in the bar met safety regulations. Despite an external expert conducting a soundproofing analysis in 2021, no further checks were carried out.
Mayor Feraud expressed regret over the lack of inspections and emphasized the need to take responsibility for the oversight. While acknowledging the tragedy that struck the venue, he stated that immediate action would have been taken if safety concerns had been raised earlier.
The investigation has led to a criminal inquiry into the bar managers, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, for potential charges related to involuntary homicide, bodily harm, and causing a fire unintentionally. The use of sparkler candles has since been banned in venues.
Authorities have identified and continue to care for the 116 individuals injured in the fire, with most still hospitalized. The injured include citizens from various countries, underscoring the international impact of the tragic incident.
Efforts are underway to conduct a thorough audit of all venues in the region to prevent similar incidents in the future, with a focus on ensuring compliance with safety standards. The local community remains committed to addressing the lapses that contributed to the devastating outcome.
