The UK government does not express sorrow over the potential fall of the Iranian regime, as suggested by a Government official. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander labeled Iran as a hostile nation aligned with Russia. A significant number of Iranians have protested for regime change, resulting in at least 116 fatalities.
Alexander stated that the UK has always considered Iran a hostile nation, citing security threats in the Middle East and beyond. She emphasized the repressive nature of the regime towards its own people, highlighting the need to address the ongoing violence in Iran.
The official mentioned Iran’s disruptive behavior and its collaboration with Vladimir Putin in evading sanctions through oil transportation. When asked about the UK’s reaction if the Iranian government collapsed, Alexander indicated that similar sentiments would likely be expressed.
Regarding the situation, the Labour representative emphasized the UK’s desire for a peaceful transition of power in case of a regime change. She stressed the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring fundamental freedoms for the Iranian population.
Notably, there are a limited number of British citizens in Iran. Iran’s parliament speaker issued a warning that the US military and Israel could be targeted if the US launches an attack on the Islamic Republic, as threatened by President Donald Trump.
Trump expressed support for the protesters in Iran, suggesting that the country is aspiring for freedom. Reports indicated that military options for a strike on Iran were presented to Trump, although no final decision had been made.
Alexander refrained from commenting on foreign policy or military plans of other nations, emphasizing the UK’s monitoring of developments in Iran. She urged Iranian authorities to protect citizens’ lives, uphold their freedoms, and demonstrate restraint in responding to protests.
The US state department issued a caution not to underestimate President Trump’s statements. Ultimately, any decision on potential conflict would lie with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US military is prepared to defend its forces, allies, and interests in the Middle East.
