Labour donor Dale Vince has taken preemptive action against potential government restrictions on children’s social media access. Vince criticized tech giants like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he perceives as unrestricted influence over young users.
Responding to parents’ concerns, the Ecotricity founder has introduced a mobile plan, named Just Talk, which allows unlimited calls and texts without internet access. Vince emphasized the necessity of such a plan to shield children from harmful online content and called on government intervention.
This initiative coincides with mounting pressure on the government to prohibit social media access for under-16s. Several Labour MPs have urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead in implementing such a ban, with other countries also contemplating similar measures.
Ecotalk, one of Vince’s ventures, has launched the Just Talk SIM-only plan offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting at £4 per month, without internet connectivity. Vince highlighted the importance of providing a communication tool that keeps children connected without exposing them to online risks posed by major tech companies.
In his statement, Vince emphasized the urgency of addressing the influence of tech companies on young people, stating that the Just Talk tariff aims to protect children from undue online exposure. Ecotalk’s mission includes supporting land restoration and rewilding projects through its operations.
Established in 2018 by Vince, Ecotalk collaborates with environmental advocate Chris Packham to restore and replant natural habitats in Sussex and Devon.
