A man who endured years of sexual abuse and mistreatment by his mother is now legally recognized as the father of his sibling following a significant DNA decision.
Logan Gifford, who disclosed the alleged abuse by his mother, Doreene Gifford, when he was 16 in 2015, asserted that the abuse began when he was just 10 years old.
Despite Doreene’s denial of the accusations, she accepted an Alford plea in 2015, conceding to attempted sexual assault and lewdness with a child under 14. Prosecutors had compelling evidence to support a conviction, leading to her sentencing of eight to 20 years, of which she served nine before being paroled. She is now a registered sex offender.
During the legal proceedings, Doreene gave birth to a child, claiming it was from an extramarital affair. Speculation arose about the child’s paternity, prompting Logan to petition a Nevada court earlier this year to establish the biological father of his 15-year-old sibling. DNA analysis confirmed a 99.9% match between Logan, his father Theodore Gifford, and his brother.
In a complex process, DNA testing between siblings and a shared parent can be intricate due to their genetic similarities. In September, a Clark County judge declared Logan as the legal father of his brother, as no response was received from Theodore, resulting in a default ruling.
Logan expressed mixed emotions during the legal proceedings, mentioning that he had suspicions about his brother’s paternity, which were confirmed through therapy sessions. He emphasized the need for social services to recognize signs of abuse and acknowledged the tragedy of the situation, with his brother now on the path to recovery.
