A man who had been on the run from Italian authorities for 16 years was apprehended upon his return to attend the Winter Olympics to support his home nation’s ice hockey team. The 44-year-old, whose identity remains undisclosed, was intercepted by police before reaching the arena, following an arrest warrant issued in 2010 for a string of thefts he allegedly committed. The Carabinieri police indicated that he is now facing an 11-month and seven-day prison sentence.
Authorities located the fugitive after he checked into a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan, choosing to return to Italy despite being a wanted individual. His intention was to attend the ice hockey events at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, but he was taken into custody before reaching the venue. He was subsequently transported to the central San Vittore Prison while the Slovakian men’s ice hockey team achieved a surprising victory against Finland with a 4-1 score.
