A controversy has arisen at the Winter Olympics where a French judge is being accused of manipulating the figure skating results to ensure that France’s Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron won the gold medal with a total score of 225.82. The pair narrowly edged out Team USA’s Madison Chock and Evan Bates by just 1.43 points.
The focus of the dispute stems from the scoring of French judge Jezabel Dabouis, which has sparked debate over the fairness of the competition. Chock and Bates, who had previously won three consecutive world championships in ice dance, were hot favorites going into the event in Milan.
Following the rhythm dance segment, Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron were placed first by the judges, with Chock and Bates settling for second. Notably, the judges’ scores showed a significant variance, with five judges ranking the French duo the highest, while only three placed the Americans at the top.
Despite five of the six judges giving the highest score to Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron, the margin between the pairs was still relatively close, except for Dabouis, who awarded the French skaters a substantial 5.74-point lead over Chock and Bates. This disparity raised eyebrows among spectators and participants alike.
In the subsequent free dance round, five out of nine judges favored Chock and Bates. However, Dabouis notably scored Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron’s routine significantly higher by 7.71 points. Even with the varied judgments, no judge who ranked Chock and Bates first in the free dance awarded them a lead of more than 4.1 points over the eventual winners.
The International Skating Union responded to the backlash, stating that variations in scores are common among judges and mechanisms are in place to address such discrepancies. The ISU reaffirmed its confidence in the fairness of the scoring process.
In a post-event interview with NBC News, Chock and Bates expressed their emotions regarding the judging outcomes, emphasizing the pride they felt in their performances and their resilience throughout the competition. Bates highlighted the subjectivity of the sport, acknowledging that outcomes can sometimes be influenced by judges’ interpretations.
