An esteemed bed and breakfast (B&B) along with a café has shut down, delivering a significant blow to the community. The closure was attributed to the challenging location by the owner, leading to a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after operating for two and a half years. Owner Sonya Resemblance expressed her gratitude for serving what she referred to as “beautiful people.”
This closure is part of a broader trend affecting the pub and hospitality industry in the UK, with numerous establishments shutting down annually due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer behaviors.
For instance, the beloved White Horse establishment on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently. Pub owners had previously cautioned about the industry facing a potential decline due to substantial cost increases. In the initial three months of 2025, 300 pubs had already shut down.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before closing, The Dove Inn faced challenges. Sonya Resemblance took over the inn in July 2023, offering a variety of meals and services to the local community, while also contributing to job creation, training opportunities, and mental well-being initiatives.
The business received two prestigious awards in Norfolk at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards, winning titles for Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
A distinctive feature of the inn was its entirely gluten-free menu, a point of pride for Sonya as it catered to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In announcing the closure, Sonya expressed appreciation for the support received and highlighted the positive impact the business had in creating employment opportunities and fostering social connections for improved mental health.
Despite efforts from loyal customers to prevent the closure, Sonya confirmed the unfortunate news on January 16. The announcement drew an outpouring of supportive messages from the community.
One patron expressed regret over the closure and hoped for a potential return of the business in the future.
