U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in “positive” discussions in Kyiv on Sunday during their inaugural official trip to Ukraine, aiming to facilitate an end to the prolonged Russian full-scale invasion. The visit by the American delegates came after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day, as both sides intensified their aerial assaults. Efforts by Washington to halt the conflict had slowed down over the past six months due to the Trump administration’s focus on the Iran situation.
Recently, Russia has employed swift jet-powered drones, leading to a frequent presence of air-raid sirens in Kyiv and challenges for troops in advancing along the 1,250-kilometer front line. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the desire for a “just, equitable peace” that would prevent any future aggression against Ukraine. He expressed gratitude to the American envoys for their visit, marking their first time in Ukraine, and announced plans to involve national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany in subsequent discussions.
Witkoff remarked on the discussions as “meaningful, substantial, and promising,” emphasizing the importance, according to U.S. President Donald Trump, of not only ending the current conflict but also establishing conditions for a lasting peace. Discussions with a senior Ukrainian official, held under anonymity, primarily focused on strategies to navigate the upcoming winter and address immediate concerns.
In Moscow, the meeting with Putin yielded no significant breakthroughs after lasting over three hours, with discussions covering economic collaboration and potential joint projects between Russia and America. The previous visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow occurred in January, where they also engaged in talks with Putin.
Despite an agreement between Putin and Zelenskyy to suspend strikes on each other’s capitals during negotiations, exchanges of fire persisted, resulting in casualties and damages on both sides. The situation escalated with drone strikes and interceptions, leading to casualties in both Ukraine and Russia. The hope for a peaceful resolution was evident in public gestures, such as a moment of silence in Kyiv to honor fallen soldiers, although skepticism lingered among some individuals regarding the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts.
As stakeholders await tangible outcomes from ongoing discussions, the global community continues to monitor developments in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
