Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a recent government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. The approximately 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are now required to promptly notify consumers of any changes in petrol and diesel prices. This information will be accessible to drivers through various third-party websites and apps, enabling them to compare fuel prices across the country.
The objective is to eventually provide real-time updates, giving motorists greater opportunities to save money, potentially saving them hundreds of pounds over time. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by an interim scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.
The new government program, known as the ‘Fuel Finder’ initiative, encompasses all petrol stations and enforces strict guidelines on the disclosure of pricing information. Stations failing to comply may face penalties of up to 1% of their global annual turnover.
This initiative was introduced in response to concerns that drivers were being charged excessive prices at the pump. Even a small price difference of 5p per liter between stations could save the average driver £2.75 per refueling. Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers with information to make informed choices about where to refuel.
The AA anticipates a shift in the fuel pricing landscape in the UK, similar to practices in other European countries. Drivers will have access to pricing information through mobile apps and in-car displays, enabling them to make cost-effective refueling decisions.
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, expressed optimism that the initiative would enhance competition among retailers, ultimately leading to lower fuel prices for consumers. As more fuel stations participate in daily price reporting, drivers will have increased visibility into the cheapest options near them through their preferred apps or navigation systems.
Currently, the national average price for unleaded petrol is 132.1p per liter, with diesel priced at 141.2p per liter.
