TIFF Shifts Focus to Industry Deals & Sessions

The Toronto International Festival has long been known as a trendsetter, attracting movie stars to kick off their Oscar campaigns. However, with major films and top-tier celebrities choosing other festivals for their premieres, TIFF is adapting by focusing more on the business side of movie acquisition and packaging.

In response to industry changes, TIFF is shifting its emphasis towards dealmaking and strategic sessions, moving away from just being a premiere platform. With financial support from Ottawa, TIFF: The Market is now offering 70 sessions exploring various aspects of the entertainment industry, featuring projects like a sci-fi film starring Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra, a romantic comedy with Colin Firth and Halle Berry, and a new installment of the Air Bud franchise.

While TIFF aims to stay competitive, it faces challenges from other major players like the Cannes marketplace and the American Film Market. The festival is also highlighting emerging markets in Africa and Asia to attract international buyers, especially amidst discussions of new incentives for American film production.

As TIFF evolves to cater more to industry professionals, questions arise about its impact on film fans who have been a core part of the festival experience. With rising ticket prices, there are concerns about accessibility for the general public, who contribute significantly to the festival’s atmosphere and success.

Despite a decrease in A-list attendees, TIFF still showcases buzzworthy films, including “Ink” by director Danny Boyle and “The Debut” starring Julianne Moore. The festival is also featuring TV series like Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” and the Crave series “Yaga”, adding a diverse range of content to its programming.

Moreover, Canadian cinema is well-represented at TIFF, with titles like “The Stunt Driver”, “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple”, and “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” among the offerings. These films showcase the diversity and creativity of the Canadian film industry, attracting both local and international audiences to the festival.
