Russian drone attacks in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and its vicinity continued for the fifth consecutive day on Monday, causing disruption to daily life for millions with frequent air raid sirens. The assaults early on Monday resulted in four injuries and damage to warehouse facilities, an apartment building, and a retail store in the Kyiv region, as reported by regional Gov. In recent days, swarms of drones, many equipped with jet engines, have plagued Kyiv and nearby areas, leading to casualties among residents and destruction of homes and warehouses. An attack by a Russian drone on an ammunition depot last Friday triggered explosions, resulting in the loss of 38 lives.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Sunday that the continuous drone attacks were intended to wear down the Ukrainian population. He disclosed that Russia had launched nearly 1,500 drones at Ukraine in four days, with over half of them being jet-powered.
Additionally, a Russian strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by private courier Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, according to Gov. Oleh Kiper on Monday. In the southeastern city of Kryvyi Rih, an industrial business was targeted by a jet-powered drone attack, injuring two individuals, as confirmed by a local official on Monday.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated their strikes recently, targeting economic assets such as major e-commerce entities and retailers. Russia focused on warehouses belonging to Ukraine’s primary supermarket chains, leading postal service, and home-goods stores. In retaliation, Ukraine also targeted Russian infrastructure, with a logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg falling victim to a drone attack, as mentioned by the local governor on Monday.
Russia has increased its air attacks during the summer, capitalizing on Ukraine’s lack of interceptors capable of downing ballistic missiles. The use of daytime drone waves has disrupted daily life for Kyiv residents, causing interruptions to public transportation and daily routines.
During alerts, dozens of passengers in Kyiv found themselves waiting on crowded metro platforms for services to resume after train operations were halted due to the situation. Among those affected was Yulianna Oliynyk, a 38-year-old nurse and psychologist, who was stranded on a metro platform with her two sons while trying to reach a school before the start of the academic year.
Oliynyk expressed her frustration, mentioning that they had spent the previous night with relatives due to the disruptions caused by the alerts. She contemplated the idea of spending the night in the metro station with her sons, unsure of how to proceed given the ongoing challenges.
This ongoing situation has created a sense of uncertainty and disruption for the residents of Kyiv as they navigate the challenges posed by the continuous drone attacks.
