The Ontario government’s recent decision to end exclusivity rights could pave the way for additional casinos in the Niagara Region. Premier Doug Ford introduced the Destination Niagara plan in December, aiming to boost tourism by introducing new casinos, a theme park, expanded airport facilities, and more attractions.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has finalized an agreement with MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc., enabling other casino operators to enter the market. Despite relinquishing its exclusivity rights, MGE will retain control over Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara. OLG is gearing up to initiate a procurement process later this year to seek out potential new casino operators.
Local opposition has surfaced regarding Ford’s proposal under Destination Niagara to install a second ferris wheel near the falls. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati expressed skepticism about the idea, labeling it a “dead issue,” and indicating a lack of public support for a Ferris wheel in Queen Victoria Park.
