Morrisons Customers Upset Over New ATM Withdrawal Fee

Morrisons customers express anger over the recent implementation of a fee for ATM withdrawals. Stakeford shoppers voiced their discontent on the local Morrisons Daily convenience store’s Facebook page regarding the change, clarifying that the cash machine’s operational decisions are independent of the store. This charge adjustment is reportedly part of a trial conducted in various Morrisons Daily outlets.

A customer anonymously posted, criticizing the newly introduced withdrawal fee at Morrisons Daily. The individual emphasized the perceived unfairness of this change, highlighting the historical precedent of free cash withdrawals and calling for action, such as contacting Members of Parliament (MPs).

The disappearance of nearly 19,000 free-to-use ATMs from UK high streets since January 2018 has been noted by the Payment Choice Alliance. In 2025, the average UK adult withdrew £1,352 from ATMs, indicating a 5% decline compared to the previous year’s figure of £1,424.

Morrisons disclosed a £381 million annual loss for the year ending October 26, primarily attributed to a substantial interest bill on its debt amounting to £281 million. Despite a reduced loss compared to the previous fiscal year, the supermarket chain, owned by US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, reported a remaining debt of £3.1 billion.

The company cited escalating costs and a cyber incident leading to an IT systems outage before Christmas 2024 as contributing factors. Notwithstanding these challenges, Morrisons saw a 3.4% increase in like-for-like sales during the Christmas period, with strong demand for its premium own-brand products driving a 17.4% sales surge.

Rami Baitieh, Morrisons’ CEO, praised the company’s performance in a competitive market environment, emphasizing sustained sales growth, stable EBITDA, and market share maintenance amid consumer spending constraints.
