A mother who believed her symptoms were related to menopause or a change in water discovered they were actually indicative of a life-threatening illness. Jessica Farrington faced a variety of issues for months, such as night sweats, fatigue, and weight loss, without understanding their significance.
The 46-year-old initially attributed the unusual symptoms to lifestyle adjustments or menopause. She mentioned, “I was soaked through my pajamas and sheets with night sweats, which I thought could be due to perimenopause/menopause considering my age.”
Jessica ignored the symptoms until she started experiencing itchy skin several months later, which she also attributed to the water after moving from Montana to Texas. Despite trying various solutions like filters and detergent changes, the itching persisted. She also linked the symptoms to menopause and noted unexplained weight loss.
It wasn’t until she discovered a small lump in her armpit that Jessica realized something serious might be wrong. Reluctant to seek medical help initially, she eventually consulted a doctor in December 2024 after the lump continued to grow.
After almost a year of symptoms, medical tests were conducted, including hormone level assessments, a mammogram, and an ultrasound of the lump, due to concerns of breast cancer. Despite normal lab results, an ultrasound in January 2025 revealed concerning changes in her armpit lymph nodes.
A biopsy confirmed Jessica had follicular lymphoma, a type of lymphatic system cancer. This diagnosis prompted a series of tests to determine the extent of the disease, revealing affected lymph nodes in various areas, leading to a stage four classification.
Jessica commenced an intensive treatment plan involving chemotherapy and immunotherapy, enduring grueling sessions every six weeks for six months. Despite the challenges, she embraced the treatment to combat the disease.
Currently in remission, Jessica undergoes maintenance therapy with immunotherapy every two months for two years to manage the condition, as follicular lymphoma is not curable. She shared that the diagnosis has profoundly impacted her perspective on life, prompting a shift in how she values time and relationships.
Jessica emphasized the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical attention if something feels amiss, encouraging others to advocate for their health. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges the unpredictability of life and the resilience required to continue living fully, despite uncertainties.
