A resident in Minneapolis has described the city as descending into a state of turmoil after reports emerged that a five-year-old child had been apprehended by ICE.
ICE came under intense scrutiny recently following allegations that a young boy was detained in Minnesota and utilized as “bait” to attract family members out of their residence. An official from The Columbia Heights Public School District disclosed that five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was intercepted by masked individuals in his driveway upon returning home from school with his father.
Local resident Vanessa Mullenix expressed deep concern, stating, “The situation we are facing now, with ICE targeting children and exploiting them to force their families out of their homes, is truly distressing.”
Vice President JD Vance defended the action during his visit to Minnesota on the same day, asserting that the child had not been detained and that the incident was part of a broader effort to apprehend his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias.
In response to the situation, Vance questioned the criticism, asking, “Should ICE just ignore a five-year-old? Should they allow a young child to be exposed to freezing temperatures? Should they refrain from arresting an undocumented immigrant in the United States?”
Mullenix, a fellow resident of Columbia Heights, shared her shock at the turn of events, stating, “I fear for the safety of my family, friends, and neighbors.” Another community member mentioned that a local school had transitioned to online learning to safeguard students who felt unsafe attending school, a precaution deemed unfortunate by many.
The Columbia Heights Public School District confirmed yesterday that four students had been taken into custody by federal authorities in separate incidents over the past fortnight. Mullenix and her neighbor, Kelly Tromsten, voiced the community’s struggle to comprehend the disturbing events that have brought their city to international attention.
Tromsten expressed dismay, saying, “It’s disheartening to witness the manipulation of facts. We are all witnessing the same events. The distortion of the narrative is the most reprehensible aspect. How can anyone view these incidents and demand further evidence? What more could they possibly need to see?”
