“Generations of Excellence: Upholding a Track and Field Dynasty”

The burden of a family legacy can be challenging to bear. The newest cohort of a long-standing track and field dynasty in Swift Current faced initial struggles with the sport. Jackson Tuplin, recalling his early days, admitted to disliking track and being more inclined towards hockey. His siblings, Carter and Macey, also had a rocky start in a sport deeply embedded in their family’s heritage.

However, their perspective shifted during high school, leading them to become the fourth generation of their family to engage in track and field at the University of Saskatchewan. The family’s involvement in the sport traces back to 1948 when their great-grandmother, Anne Mang, clinched the 100-meter provincial championship and excelled in other events like long jump, javelin, and ball throw.

Cyndi Tasche, Anne Mang’s daughter, reminisced about paging through her mother’s scrapbook filled with ribbons and crests, which sparked her interest in the sport. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Cyndi attended the University of Saskatchewan under the renowned coach Lyle Sanderson and later coached the track team at Swift Current Comprehensive High School.

Continuing the legacy, Cyndi’s daughters, Mandi, Lindsay, and Hillary, embraced track and field, earning national championship team rings and prestigious hall of fame honors. Mandi, inspired by her grandmother’s triumphs, pursued her own aspirations in track and field, setting her sights on becoming a provincial champion.

Amidst their track successes, Mandi and her husband, Emery Tuplin, first crossed paths through track and field and later shared accolades within the sport. Emery’s contributions to the men’s team also led to national championship victories. The couple’s intertwined journey exemplified the strong bonds fostered within the track and field community, resulting in enduring friendships and even marriages.

Transitioning to their roles in Swift Current, Mandi took on coaching responsibilities, guiding the high school track team to a remarkable streak of seven provincial championships. However, their children were never pressured to follow suit, as Emery emphasized the importance of pursuing what brings them joy.

Jackson and Carter emerged as standout athletes in their own right, securing multiple provincial gold medals and national accolades. Macey, while leaning towards softball, also showcased her talent by representing Saskatchewan at a prestigious track and field championship.

The Tuplin family’s dedication to hard work and perseverance has been the cornerstone of their success in track and field, with plans to continue this tradition through teaching and giving back to the sport. Mandi expressed pride in upholding her grandmother’s legacy, envisioning a bright future where the next generation will carry on the family’s track and field heritage for years to come.
