EverWind Fuels, a company specializing in green hydrogen, is required to provide additional information to the province before advancing with a proposed wind farm project in Guysborough County. Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister, Tim Halman, announced the environmental assessment decision for the Harbour Hills Wind Project, noting that the company had not completed necessary baseline field surveys for the area where 30 wind turbines are planned.
The surveys, which must include assessments of various wildlife and plant species such as moose, bats, birds, turtles, plants, and lichen, are expected to be finalized within a year. EverWind’s spokesperson, Claire Parsons, stated that the company is currently evaluating the minister’s decision and remains committed to the Harbour Hills project.
The Harbour Hills venture, comprising 107 turbines, is part of EverWind’s larger plan to establish multiple wind farms in Guysborough County and other regions. Ultimately, the company aims to utilize wind energy for powering a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia.
In a related development, one of EverWind’s potential buyers for ammonia, E.ON Group in Germany, has shifted its focus away from hydrogen-related activities, impacting the market dynamics. Despite this setback, EverWind remains optimistic about securing buyers for its products, citing a growing demand for clean fuels.
Meanwhile, Bear Head Energy, another company pursuing green hydrogen production in Nova Scotia, has encountered delays in its project timelines. Although environmental approval was granted for its main facility, construction has yet to commence. The company has received an extension until 2027 to begin construction, but it has not provided recent updates on its progress.
Industry experts, like David Layzell from the University of Calgary, emphasize the importance of green hydrogen in decarbonizing energy systems globally. While the development of the hydrogen industry has been slower than anticipated, stakeholders believe in the viability of green hydrogen production in Nova Scotia, albeit with expected delays in implementation.
