“Emmy Awards to Stream on Prime Video From 2027”

In a significant shift, the Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Prime Video from 2027 onwards, marking the end of a seven-decade tradition of airing on broadcast networks. The six-year deal between Amazon and the Television Academy was announced on Tuesday, reflecting the growing influence of streaming services in the prestigious Emmy categories.

Since 1955, the Emmy Awards have been broadcast annually on one of the four major networks. The recent “Wheel Deal” rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC will be replaced by a long-term partnership with Prime Video starting with the September 2027 awards show. This move towards continuity aims to foster growth and collaboration over the years, as highlighted by Television Academy Chairman Cris Abrego.

Unlike the Oscars’ transition to YouTube in 2029, the Emmy Awards will be available immediately on Prime Video without requiring a subscription. The declining viewership of awards shows, including the Emmys, has prompted this strategic move to reach a broader audience and potentially attract a younger demographic. By leveraging Prime Video’s platform and partnerships, such as with Apple TV, the Academy and Amazon hope to boost viewership and celebrate excellence in television content.

While acknowledging the significance of the shift to streaming, Abrego emphasized that the essence of recognizing excellence remains paramount, regardless of the delivery platform. Prime Video’s experience in live event broadcasting, including sports, positions them well to enhance the Emmy Awards’ appeal and accessibility.

Looking ahead, the Emmy Awards will maintain their traditional September slot in 2027, but flexibility exists to explore different timing in future years. Abrego expressed openness to potential adjustments in collaboration with Amazon, underscoring a shared commitment to evolving the Emmy Awards experience.
