Conservative MP Criticizes Party’s Lack of Vision, Supports U.S. Trade

Conservative Member of Parliament Jamil Jivani expressed his disappointment on social media about the absence of a viable alternative to the Liberal Party while his party leader, Pierre Poilievre, embarked on a U.S. tour advocating for tariff-free trade. In a video shared online, Jivani emphasized the need for the Conservative Party to present a distinct vision for Canada, focusing on fostering a stronger relationship with the United States, averting economic crises, investing in infrastructure like pipelines, and bolstering the economy.

Jivani criticized the Liberal government for utilizing tensions with the U.S. to divert public attention, accusing the media of labeling critics of Liberal policies as “traitors” and condemning the government’s pursuit of closer ties with China. While not directly naming Poilievre, Jivani’s timing prompted former Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney to rebuke him for failing to support Poilievre’s efforts. Kenney commended Poilievre for defending Canada and advocating for free trade, contrasting Jivani’s actions as self-serving and lacking solidarity with the party leader.

Dimitri Soudas, a former communications director for ex-Prime Minister Stephen Harper, questioned Jivani’s omission of the Conservative leader in his remarks, suggesting that silence can speak volumes in politics. Meanwhile, Poilievre initiated a U.S. tour addressing Canadian concerns over the country’s role as a target for the Trump administration, emphasizing the importance of standing up for Canadian sovereignty and enhancing bilateral relations to counter shared strategic challenges, particularly from China.

As tensions escalated, Poilievre refrained from criticizing Prime Minister Mark Carney in the U.S., focusing instead on urging the government to disclose rejected trade deal details and provide a cost analysis of Canada’s counter-tariffs. The Conservative leader faced scrutiny over Jivani’s statements on U.S.-Canada relations, with internal party disagreements highlighted by Conservative MP Kyle Seeback’s critique of Jivani’s stance on tariffs, later withdrawn.

Jivani, known for his ties with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, drew attention for his interactions with U.S. trade officials and controversial remarks on American relations. Poilievre distanced himself from Jivani’s views, emphasizing the party’s collective stance on trade issues. Amid ongoing trade negotiations and political tensions, internal divisions within the Conservative Party were publicly exposed, showcasing differing perspectives on trade policies and diplomatic strategies.
