“Canadian man convicted of flamingo theft in Vegas”

In Las Vegas, a Canadian man was found guilty of animal cruelty for snatching a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a well-known hotel in what prosecutors described as a drunken and malicious act. Mitchell Fairbarn faced charges for injuring the flamingo on March 3 and underwent a trial where he pleaded not guilty. The jury convicted him on felony and misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, leading to potential imprisonment.

Fairbarn, a contractor from rural Ontario, shared in court that he consumed a significant amount of alcohol, around “30 to 40” beers, during his visit to Las Vegas for a construction expo. Despite his belief that taking the flamingo would be a humorous prank, the incident caused harm to the bird, resulting in missing feathers, broken shafts, and blood loss consistent with trauma.

During the trial, footage revealed Fairbarn holding the flamingo and spending time with it in his hotel room. Witnesses testified to the events, with one stating that Peachy was visibly distressed and injured during the ordeal. The flamingo required medical treatment, including antibiotics and pain medication, to recover from the injuries inflicted.

Fairbarn’s defense attorney argued that the actions were a result of intoxication and not intended to cause harm. The court proceedings highlighted the regret expressed by Fairbarn for his actions and the subsequent impact on Peachy. Despite the incident, the flamingo has since recovered and is in good health, according to Caesars Entertainment.

Animal rights advocates, including Nevada activist John Waudby, viewed the verdict as a step towards ensuring the protection of animals in the state. The case served as a reminder of the consequences of animal cruelty, with similar incidents of mistreatment reported at other Las Vegas establishments in recent months.
