“Canadian Government to Shift Research Farm Operations”

The Canadian federal government has announced plans to gradually cease operations at its research farm located in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, within the next year. The seed increase unit currently housed at the facility will be relocated to the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre by 2028. This move is part of a strategic transition process, with the unit expected to operate from both sites in 2027 to facilitate the shift.

The seed increase unit at the farm is responsible for propagating and distributing breeder seeds to pedigreed growers for multiplication and subsequent sale as certified seed. The decision to wind down operations at the Indian Head farm follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the federal and provincial governments. This agreement aims to preserve the Indian Head and Scott research farms, which were initially slated for closure along with five other research facilities nationwide.

Under the memorandum, the provincial government will assume control of the land as the federal operations are phased out. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting the Canadian seed sector, ensuring the fulfillment of breeder seed requests, and upholding pedigreed seed quality standards.

The fate of the Indian Head and Scott research farms beyond the relocation of the seed increase unit remains uncertain. Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit stated that negotiations are underway with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada regarding the future use of the remaining land at the two research facilities. Additionally, the provincial government is collaborating with the Saskatchewan agricultural industry to devise a comprehensive plan for the utilization of the research farmland.
