Mona Nemer emphasized the importance of understanding people’s various frustrations stemming from the pandemic, such as economic losses, bereavement, and disruptions to education.
Nemer, an impartial consultant without policy-making authority, emphasized the need for a focused and non-political assessment that addresses key issues promptly to prevent prolonged discussions that may fade from memory. She highlighted the importance of providing context for discussions on contentious topics like vaccines and urged for constructive reflections to better equip the country and its citizens for forthcoming health crises.
The call for introspection comes as Conservative MP Dean Allison prepares to convene an inquiry in September focused on individuals purportedly affected by COVID-19 vaccines. Nemer expressed concerns over diminishing trust in governmental and scientific institutions, attributing it to a lack of understanding and differing perspectives.
Furthermore, Nemer voiced unease over the global response to other infectious diseases like Ebola, citing delayed diagnostics as a hindrance to containing the recent outbreak. She underscored the necessity of integrating pandemic preparedness into routine health services and cautioned against complacency post-COVID, pointing out the continued threat posed by diseases like bird flu.
While acknowledging pandemic fatigue, Nemer stressed the imperative of sustained readiness against emerging viruses, emphasizing the importance of building public trust in peacetime to navigate future crises effectively.
