“Edmonton Marathon Blunder Costs 13 Runners Boston Qualification”

Thirteen runners who participated in the Edmonton Marathon missed out on qualifying for the Boston Marathon due to a course error that made the race longer than intended. The Edmonton organizers acknowledged the mistake after determining that the race was approximately two-thirds of a kilometer longer than it should have been.

Initially, the organizers defended the accuracy of the course length but later admitted that there was a miscalculation, attributing it to a detour that was incorrectly mapped. The Boston Athletics Association, responsible for the Boston Marathon, stated that while the extended distance in Edmonton would not disqualify runners if they met the Boston qualifying time, adjustments made to race times to accommodate the extra distance led to the rejection of 13 applicants.

Edmonton event organizers pledged to reach out to the affected individuals and collaborate with Athletics Canada to review the course certification process to prevent similar errors in the future. Tom Keogh, the Edmonton Marathon race director, expressed regret over the miscalculation and assured that steps would be taken to avoid such occurrences going forward.

Despite the course error, the Edmonton Marathon witnessed two course records being broken in both the men’s and women’s marathons. Several participants noted that their own distance calculations indicated that the race exceeded the standard 42.2-kilometer full marathon and 21.1-kilometer half marathon lengths. Race officials later confirmed that the course was 674.7 meters longer than required.
