Norway Considers Smart Glasses Ban for Privacy Protection

Norway is considering implementing a temporary ban on the use of smart glasses in certain public spaces to address concerns over privacy violations. The proposed ban would cover areas where privacy is deemed crucial, such as healthcare facilities, changing rooms in fitness centers, and locations frequented by children like schools and playgrounds. Additionally, public events, parks, beaches, museums, and shopping centers could also fall under the ban.

The government aims to assess the impact of smart glasses and determine which types of devices should be regulated. While the proposal does not suggest a complete ban, it seeks to restrict the use of smart glasses in specific settings while allowing for private use. Exceptions may be made for vulnerable groups to enable socially beneficial uses of the technology.

Privacy advocates have praised Norway’s initiative, emphasizing the importance of protecting individuals from unwarranted surveillance. Meanwhile, despite efforts by tech companies like Meta to promote responsible usage of AI glasses, some businesses are taking precautionary measures. For instance, a Dutch eyewear retailer has halted sales of AI smart glasses amid growing concerns.

The move by Norway reflects a broader global trend of addressing the implications of emerging technologies on personal privacy. Other regions, such as California and the UK, are also grappling with the regulation of smart glasses to safeguard individuals’ rights and prevent misuse of surveillance capabilities.
