“Andrea Horwath Enters Hamilton Mayoral Race”

Andrea Horwath has officially entered the competition for the position of Hamilton mayor in the upcoming municipal election scheduled for October 26. Although Horwath had previously declared her candidacy for re-election, she had not completed the necessary paperwork to be recognized as an official candidate. However, on Friday afternoon, she was officially registered as a candidate on the city’s official website.

In a press release, Horwath acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the city over the past four years, including issues such as a housing crisis, homelessness, increased living costs, and infrastructure underinvestment. While noting that not all problems have been resolved, she emphasized the progress made by confronting these challenges directly.

During a news conference on Friday afternoon, Horwath expressed pride in her efforts to advance major projects that were previously stagnant. She highlighted achievements such as the Hamilton LRT, Jamesville affordable housing redevelopment, and the TD Coliseum. Looking ahead, Horwath mentioned her focus on enhancing cybersecurity measures following the 2024 cyberattack on city systems, indicating the need for further improvements in digital services for residents.

The last mayoral race in Hamilton was a closely contested one, with Horwath narrowly winning the election in October 2022 over Keanin Loomis by approximately 1,600 votes. In the upcoming election, she will once again face Loomis and several other contenders. Notably, since the city’s amalgamation in 2000, only one mayor, Fred Eisenberger, has been re-elected for consecutive terms in 2014 and 2018.

Several candidates have already announced their mayoral campaigns in Hamilton, including Sasha Austin, Ejaz Butt, Rob Cooper, Paul Fromm, Scarlett Gillespie, Keanin Loomis, Pamela Mitchell, Kevin Walker, and Nathalie Xian Yi Yan. Each candidate brings unique perspectives and priorities to the mayoral race, aiming to address various issues affecting the city.

Horwath, who currently serves as the mayor of Hamilton and was a longtime leader of the Ontario NDP, is expected to share more details about her re-election campaign in the near future. The race for Hamilton’s mayoral position is shaping up to be a competitive and diverse contest, with candidates offering different visions for the city’s future.
