A search for a new location for a library in the west end of St. John’s has faced a setback, but there is optimism that a suitable site will be secured soon. The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago due to the expiration of its lease agreement.
Despite the popularity of the small library among patrons, a recent tender issued by the provincial government for a new location did not receive any proposals. Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed disappointment over the lack of progress, emphasizing the impact on the community members who are currently without library services.
Smee acknowledged the significance of the library to its users and highlighted the need for swift resolution to the relocation issue. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is collaborating with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next course of action, reaffirming the commitment to maintaining a library presence in the west end of St. John’s.
In an appeal to potential landlords, Smee urged them to participate in the process, emphasizing the possibility of overlooked opportunities in hosting the library. He expressed hope for a revised tender that will yield positive outcomes in the future.
Juanette Anthony, a library patron, lamented the closure of the Michael Donovan Public Library, noting its convenience and value, particularly for computer access. Anthony advocated for the library’s return to the same vicinity in an expanded space with enhanced resources.
The desire for a swift resolution to the library relocation issue is prominent among community members, reflecting the significance of the library as a cherished institution in the area.
