NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a native of Hamilton and former member of the Ottawa 67’s junior hockey team, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The OHL has expressed its support and well wishes for Mayich, aged 21, who was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
Mayich’s player profile indicates that he participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. Reports suggest that he was admitted to the hospital while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona on August 20.
Following inquiries, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, disclosed that a member of the hockey team collapsed during a morning exercise session outdoors and is currently under medical care. The university refrained from revealing the student’s identity and stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, issued a statement expressing the organization’s support for Mayich’s recovery. He mentioned that the entire Blues team is keeping Mayich in their thoughts and prayers during his medical treatment in Arizona. OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, conveying support to Mayich, his family, and loved ones.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, shared celebratory messages for Mayich when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when he was drafted by the Blues in 2023. The Huskies highlighted Mayich’s long-standing involvement with the organization since he was nine years old.
