The union representing Air Canada pilots has raised concerns about what it perceives as a “retaliatory and anti-labour” move by Scandinavian Airlines, where Anko van der Werff, Air Canada’s incoming CEO, currently serves as president and CEO.
A recent incident involved the dismissal of Scandinavian Airlines Captain Mattias Åman Thiel, who also chairs the SAS section of the Swedish Pilots’ Association. While the airline confirmed Thiel’s termination, the reason behind it was not disclosed.
In response, the union and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations have called for Thiel’s reinstatement. ALPA Canada’s president criticized the dismissal as “unwarranted” in a letter addressed to van der Werff.
ALPA Canada emphasized the importance of how van der Werff handles the situation, signaling the potential impact on his relationship with Canadian airline pilots. The union urged for Thiel’s immediate reinstatement in the letter copied to Air Canada’s board of directors chair.
Air Canada declined to comment on the matter, stating it does not engage in discussions involving another carrier. While van der Werff did not respond to interview requests, SAS defended its decision, emphasizing adherence to the Scandinavian labour model.
The dismissal of Thiel has sparked controversy, with the Swedish Airline Pilots Association challenging the grounds for his termination. Allegations suggest Thiel was fired for traveling abroad during union work hours, which the pilots’ union contests, citing remote work arrangements.
Amidst ongoing disputes between pilots and the airline, concerns have been raised regarding the impact on the future CEO’s rapport with employees. ALPA Canada’s head stressed the importance of trust in maintaining a healthy relationship with employees and vowed to rally support for Thiel’s cause.
