Starting in the upcoming month, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) passengers will only be required to pay fares for their initial 47 trips under the city’s new fare capping pilot program. Effective September 1, riders will automatically travel for free after completing 47 trips in a given calendar month using the same payment card.
The city’s budget approved the pilot and its September commencement back in February. Mayor Olivia Chow highlighted the program’s aim to offer riders flexibility and enhance affordability during a recent news conference.
With monthly TTC passes priced at $156 for adults, passengers need to take approximately 47 trips to maximize their value. Prior to fare capping, riders had to pay the full pass amount upfront, regardless of whether they utilized the pass fully or not.
Councilor Jaamal Myers, TTC Board Chair, noted that from September onwards, customers will have a seamless experience of tapping and traveling without the need for additional considerations. Concurrent with the pilot’s launch, the Youth, Adult, Senior, and Fair Pass Transit Discount Program TTC Monthly Passes are set to be discontinued by the end of August as per a recent TTC news release.
Initially anticipated to cost a total of $3.5 million in 2026, the fare capping initiative was put forth, with $2.9 million allocated from the TTC and $600,000 from the city budget. The 2026 budget also included a fare freeze for the third consecutive year along with the fare capping introduction.
