The ensemble for the TV series “Heated Rivalry” is expanding with new additions, as the Canadian-produced hockey drama secures three more actors for its upcoming season. The show gained global recognition in its first season, comprising six episodes, and was acquired by HBO in the U.S. and internationally. This boosted the careers of its main stars, including Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, and François Arnaud.
The fresh faces announced as part of the cast are Ukrainian-American actress Milla Jovovich, known for her roles in the “Resident Evil” franchise and “The Fifth Element,” Kevin Zegers, hailing from Woodstock, Ont., recognized for his appearances in “Gossip Girl” and films such as “Transamerica,” and Paul Gross, a prominent figure in Canadian film, TV, and theatre, famous for works like “Due South” and “Men With Brooms.”
Nova Scotia author Rachel Reid, whose book series “Game Changers” inspired the show, expressed her excitement at the new cast members. The series revolves around the clandestine relationship between two rival young hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. Paul Gross will portray the hockey league commissioner, Roger Crowell, while Kevin Zegers will depict Coach Wiebe of the Ottawa Centaurs, the team Hollander belongs to. Milla Jovovich will take on the character of Dr. Galina Molchalina, a therapist who aids Rozanov.
Additionally, the upcoming season will feature returning actors from Season 1, such as Robbie G.K., Sophie Nélisse, Christina Chang, and Dylan Walsh. The production has also enlisted a range of Canadian talent for the new season, including Charlie Gillespie, Daniel Diemer, Emily Hampshire, and Priyanka.
Emily Hampshire, from “Schitt’s Creek,” shared her joy in reuniting with series creator and director Jacob Tierney. She emphasized the immense success of “Heated Rivalry,” surpassing even the impact of “Schitt’s Creek,” which garnered international acclaim and dominated the 2020 Primetime Emmy awards.
Despite its widespread popularity, “Heated Rivalry” is ineligible for the current Primetime Emmy awards. However, the show triumphed at the Canadian Screen Awards, winning several accolades, including Best Drama. Season 2 of the series commenced filming on August 17 and is scheduled to premiere in Spring 2027 on Crave.
