Hamilton’s streets are set to transform into a vibrant stage this weekend as dancers from the region come together to honor hip-hop culture. The 73 ‘Til Infinity: Outdoor Dance Series was launched in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, paying homage to its roots in 1973.
Now in its fourth year, this free event offers a lineup of dance performances, workshops, a block party, and an all-styles dance battle. Josh Taylor, the artistic director of Defining Movement Dance and the curator of 73 ‘Til Infinity, describes it as a celebration of street dance culture.
The festivities kicked off on Tuesday with free workshops on King William Street, coinciding with hip-hop’s birthday. The event will continue with a block party on Friday and a dance battle on Saturday. Taylor emphasized that the event aims to shine a spotlight on dancers and their talents, highlighting their importance in the hip-hop community.
Sisters Claris and Amelia Menjivar, who have been part of 73 ‘Til Infinity since its inception, shared their journey of growing up surrounded by dance, inspired by their father, a dancer who crossed paths with Taylor during their time at Cathedral High School. Both sisters now teach and choreograph at Defining Movement Dance, contributing to the production of various shows, including 73 ‘Til Infinity.
Claris expressed that the weekend presents an opportunity not only to showcase dancers but also to educate people about the cultural significance behind hip-hop. She emphasized the importance of understanding the history of hip-hop, which she believes serves as a platform for connecting with the culture established by Black and marginalized communities.
The weekend will feature a range of street-dance styles such as breaking, locking, popping, and whacking (also known as waacking), originating in the 1970s in Los Angeles among 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Claris stressed the significance of delving into the culture’s history to truly engage with hip-hop.
The event will culminate in a one-on-one dance battle on Saturday, judged by Suga Pop, a renowned street dancer with a significant legacy in the industry. The competition will see dancers improvising to live music by DJ English, with the winner taking home a cash prize.
Despite Hamilton’s dance scene sometimes being overshadowed by Toronto, Taylor highlighted the thriving dance community in the city, encompassing various dance forms. He emphasized the supportive nature of Hamilton’s smaller dance community, which fosters collaboration and camaraderie among dancers.
Taylor pointed out that 73 ‘Til Infinity aims to showcase this sense of community, providing an inclusive space where individuals of all dance backgrounds can participate and appreciate the culture. The Menjivar sisters emphasized the welcoming nature of the community, encouraging everyone to join in and experience the energy of the event.
