“Volunteers Shine Behind the Scenes at Summer Games”

Athletes are showcasing their talents at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, with a dedicated team of over 300 volunteers in orange shirts working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure smooth operations.

The transition day on Wednesday marked the arrival of the second wave of athletes to the city, with sports activities set to resume later in the evening. Duane Huxter, stationed at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, has been diligently organizing merchandise for the athletes, dedicating more than a week to folding t-shirts.

Reflecting on his unexpected extended stay, Huxter shared with CBC News that his initial plan to organize a small amount of merchandise turned into a continuous commitment. Volunteers play a pivotal role in various aspects of the Games, from collaborating with local authorities to coordinating logistics and overseeing venue operations to ensure the smooth running of the games.

Dave Campbell, games director at SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in the success of the event. He acknowledged the significant contribution of volunteers in driving such events and commended the communities of Corner Brook and Stephenville for their overwhelming support.

Coordinating attire for 10 teams presents a significant challenge, but Huxter highlighted the impact it has on creating lasting memories for the athletes. Despite playing a smaller role in events like the opening ceremonies, he finds fulfillment in supporting athletes to excel.

Expressing his satisfaction, Huxter stated, “It’s a lot of work, it can be physically tiring. But at the end of the day, I want the athletes to leave this event with a good feeling. And I’m contributing a small part to that.” He emphasized the joy of witnessing athletes proudly donned in their team colors during the opening ceremonies, knowing that he played a crucial role in preparing their attire.

The dedication and hard work of volunteers like Huxter are instrumental in ensuring a positive and memorable experience for all participants at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook.
