Canada and the United States are in the final stages of negotiating a trade deal that is anticipated to involve a reduction in U.S. tariffs on Canadian products by President Donald Trump in return for commitments, such as reintroducing American liquor to provincial store shelves. The agreement, which officials are framing as a way to support industries affected by tariffs, is expected to see a decrease in U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 50% to 25%. Talks on derivatives and exemptions are ongoing.
Additionally, the deal is likely to lower Trump’s tariff rate on Canadian-made cars and trucks from 25% to 15%. The highly integrated North American auto market means that vehicles assembled in Canada often contain over 50% U.S.-made components. If the tariff only applies to the non-U.S. portion, the effective rate could be reduced by up to 7.5%.
Following a briefing by Prime Minister Mark Carney to premiers on the deal’s outline, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe praised the potential agreement as a “best-in-class trade deal” that could provide enhanced market access. He acknowledged that the trading relationship with the U.S. has shifted due to protectionist policies but expressed optimism about the progress made to date.
Meanwhile, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston also expressed optimism about the proposed deal, highlighting the preservation of Canada’s supply management system and favorable defense procurement provisions. Both premiers commended the efforts of Carney and his team in negotiating with the U.S.
President Trump described the deal with Canada as positive for both countries, indicating that details of the negotiations are being finalized. Carney emphasized the significant progress made in discussions with the U.S. and reiterated Canada’s goal of securing the best possible deal for its businesses, workers, farmers, and families.
The trade agreement is anticipated to address key trade issues and deliver tangible benefits for various sectors in Canada, as per Carney. While the business sector welcomed the pause in tariffs by Trump, there are calls for a swift conclusion to the negotiations to provide much-needed stability for businesses.
