“From Restrictions to Freedom: Iranian Woman Finds Running Community Fulfillment in St. John’s”

Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in being a part of her local running community, as it represents the realization of her aspirations. Having previously resided in Iran, where women face severe restrictions in sports participation, Jahankha cherishes the freedom and opportunities she now enjoys in St. John’s since 2022. She expresses gratitude for living her dreams in a place where she can engage in activities that were once only in her thoughts.

In Iran, female athletes encounter stringent dress codes imposed by the authorities to compete in public sporting events, limiting their involvement in various sports disciplines. Recent reports revealed instances where organizers faced legal repercussions for permitting women without hijabs to take part in marathons. Jahankha shared her past struggles of trying to pursue running in Tehran during her twenties but was hindered due to the prevailing circumstances.

Currently employed as a teacher in St. John’s, Jahankha reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her passion. Through social media, she found a supportive running group, which provided her with a coach and a welcoming environment. Jahankha acknowledges running not only as a physical activity but also as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety, particularly amid the ongoing tensions resulting from the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Participating in a recent Pride race alongside her family, Jahankha looks forward to another 5-kilometer race on August 16. She credits Canada for offering her opportunities that were previously unattainable in her home country due to numerous restrictions. Jahankha appreciates the freedom she now experiences and expresses her joy and gratitude for the newfound sense of liberty.
