Local council leaders are eager to keep the championship in Sheffield, despite suggestions from Barry Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, that alternative venues could be considered.
The government has intervened by offering financial support, with Prime Minister Starmer engaging in discussions about the tournament’s future during a recent visit to The Crucible with council officials and local partners.
According to a source cited by The Sheffield Star, negotiations are progressing rapidly following the Prime Minister’s involvement, indicating a positive momentum towards retaining the championship in Sheffield.
The Crucible has been the prestigious venue for the Snooker World Championships since 1977, although uncertainties have arisen due to the contractual situation. Hearn has expressed a potential shift to Saudi Arabia as a host if the demand for £1 million prize money is not met.
He emphasized the importance of government assistance in sustaining the event in the UK and specifically in Sheffield, urging the city to align with their expectations to secure the tournament’s future.
The 2026 World Snooker Championship is scheduled to commence on April 18, with Zhao Xintong, the Chinese star, defending his title after defeating Mark Williams in the previous year’s final.
