A resident living near Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old US citizen who was fatally shot by federal agents, disclosed that Pretti was part of a local group chat named “Signal ICE.”
Jeanne Massey, a community outreach worker and neighbor of Pretti, mentioned that Pretti, an ICU nurse, resided just a street away from her. Pretti was associated with the Kingfield Signal ICE watch group, a local volunteer group that promptly responds when ICE agents are spotted in the area.
The ICE Watch group consists of many volunteers, including Massey and Pretti. While Massey’s role involves coordinating quick responses to ICE sightings by patrolling the neighborhood, alerting residents, and witnessing the events, Pretti’s specific role remains unclear.
Expressing the sentiments of the community, Massey stated, “We are extremely shocked, angry, and refuse to ignore the reality – another tragic act of violence by federal agents in our city.” She added that this incident marked the third shooting during recent enforcement operations, disrupting the community’s pursuit of justice and safety.
Massey disclosed that she, along with numerous Minneapolis residents, hurried to the site of the fatal shooting and witnessed ICE officers entering the crowd and using tear gas against bystanders.
The tragic events of Saturday morning risk overshadowing the display of unity seen the day before when thousands marched through Minneapolis streets. Massey described Friday’s protest as a stand not only for immigrant neighbors but for everyone deserving to live without fear.
Despite the city’s fear, the determination of Minnesotans is clear – they refuse to back down. Massey affirmed, “We will not be silenced, intimidated, or give in. The resistance is growing stronger, fueled by anger and resolve. It is imperative to halt these operations immediately and remove these agents from Minnesota.”
