Labour MP Rachel Reeves has committed to providing substantial funding to modernize the UK’s rail network and criticized the Conservative Party and Reform for their proposed £45 billion budget cut for the North.
During a press conference in Leeds, the Chancellor, who represents Leeds West and Pudsey, emphasized the importance of investing in Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) to enhance travel experiences and community development. Reeves accused the Tories of neglecting the northern regions for over a decade.
Expressing a personal connection to the cause, Reeves stated, “I recognize the untapped potential in the North of England, and I am dedicated to ensuring that this government, under my leadership as Chancellor, will allocate significant funds to support our ambitions.”
She highlighted the critical role of financial backing in rail infrastructure development, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth across all regions and improving job opportunities and living standards for residents who have long been let down by unfulfilled promises.
The initial phase of the plan will concentrate on enhancing connectivity between Sheffield and Leeds, Leeds and York, and Leeds and Bradford. Subsequent phases will introduce a new route connecting Liverpool and Manchester via Manchester airport and Warrington, alongside improved eastward connections from Manchester to Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York.
Taking a strong stance against political opponents Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, Reeves criticized their lack of support for the North and their plans to scrap the NPR project. She reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to fully implementing the Northern Powerhouse Rail initiative in their upcoming manifesto.
Reeves also hinted at additional funding to be allocated during the spending review, ensuring that investments made now will result in tangible benefits for communities by the early 2030s. She assured that financial commitments would be made to support the project as it progresses.
