Declan Queally and Nico de Boinville have resolved their conflict following Queally’s claim that De Boinville directed a racially insensitive comment towards him at the recent Cheltenham Festival. The incident occurred during the Turners Novices’ Hurdle, the opening race of the festival, where both riders engaged in a heated exchange amid a chaotic start involving multiple false starts.
Queally, an Irish amateur rider, expressed his displeasure at the situation, stating that being verbally abused by De Boinville was unpleasant, especially considering he was competing in front of his family. De Boinville responded by suggesting Queally should reflect on his own actions.
Queally later reported the incident to the BHA stewards, alleging that De Boinville’s remarks were racially motivated. De Boinville declined to comment when approached for a response.
However, the tension between the two riders seems to have dissipated, as they were seen shaking hands and reconciling during an interview with ITV after a subsequent race. Queally acknowledged the dispute as a momentary conflict and extended well wishes to De Boinville. In return, De Boinville expressed appreciation for Queally and thanked Davy Russell for helping resolve the issue.
The reconciliation was further emphasized by a handshake between the two before they went their separate ways to prepare for the next race. Former Champion Jockey AP McCoy commended their actions as the right course of action.
