An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a woman during an immigration enforcement operation, leading to criticism from the city’s mayor for the agency’s disruptive actions.
The victim, identified as Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Conflicting reports emerged with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stating that the ICE officer acted in self-defense, accusing a person of trying to hit federal officers with a vehicle.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey countered the DHS account, citing video evidence showing ICE agents firing at a car as it attempted to leave the scene. The incident took place at East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, sparking protests with demonstrators expressing anger towards law enforcement, including senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino.
Mayor Frey condemned the presence of federal immigration agents, blaming them for causing disorder in the city and demanding their immediate departure. He emphasized solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities in the wake of the tragic event.
In a subsequent press conference, Mayor Frey urged ICE to leave Minneapolis and vowed to seek justice for the victim. He criticized the agency for its actions, stating that they are exacerbating chaos and fear in the community rather than ensuring safety.
The DHS Secretary labeled the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism,” alleging that the ICE officers faced aggression from the victim. However, Mayor Frey dismissed this narrative, asserting that the shooting was a result of excessive force and not self-defense.
The shooting in Minneapolis is part of a series of deadly incidents during immigration operations in various states since 2024. Tensions escalated in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul following a large-scale immigration crackdown initiated by DHS targeting alleged fraud among Somali residents.
