More than 30 million tons of litter are discarded across the United Kingdom annually, creating not just a visual eyesore in our neighborhoods but also causing harm to wildlife and incurring an estimated cost of £1 billion each year for cleanup efforts.
Fortunately, the environmental organization Keep Britain Tidy is reintroducing its Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean initiatives from March 13 to 29, with hundreds of thousands of individuals expected to participate in beautifying our streets once again.
Originally launched as a one-time event in 2016, a dedicated group of Litter Heroes have demonstrated their commitment to their communities by committing to collecting over 4.5 million bags of trash from various locations such as streets, parks, fields, riverbanks, and beaches across Britain.
The Great British Spring Clean is scheduled to take place from March 13 to 29. Interested participants can register at keepbritaintidy.org and pledge to collect any number of bags of litter of their choice, whether as a group, an individual, or a school. By providing basic information like their name, email address, and postcode, volunteers can indicate the amount of rubbish they aim to pick up.
Last year, nearly 400,000 volunteers engaged in the annual cleanup, filling approximately 462,000 bags with litter. A survey conducted among participants revealed that 95% believed their contributions significantly improved the cleanliness of their local communities.
Among the advocates for this year’s initiative is civil servant Emdad Rahman, a Litter Hero Ambassador supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Emdad champions the Little Litter League, an initiative promoting environmental stewardship among young people and families through regular litter-picking sessions, emphasizing the importance of educational efforts for fostering lasting change.
Emdad is joined by other dedicated individuals like Sarah Drakes, sustainability manager at Nestlé Confectionery UK&I, who has been a steadfast supporter of the Great British Spring Clean for the past six years. Through organizing employee litter-picking events and raising awareness at the York site, Sarah aims to ensure that none of the company’s packaging contributes to litter or landfills.
Additionally, long-term partners such as KFC UK&I and Mars Wrigley have been actively involved in the campaign, with initiatives like the Chewing Gum Task Force investing up to £10 million over five years to reduce gum litter nationwide, resulting in significant reductions in gum littering.
The Great British Spring Clean provides an opportunity for individuals to contribute positively to their communities by pledging to collect litter starting from February 13. Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, the CEO of Keep Britain Tidy, expressed gratitude to volunteers like Emdad for their dedication in removing harmful litter from public spaces, while Laura Chow, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, commended the volunteers for their efforts in protecting the environment.
The success of this year’s campaign is made possible by the support of People’s Postcode Lottery players, media partners Bauer Media Outdoor, Magic Radio, The Mirror, and supporting partners like KFC UK&I, Mars Wrigley, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Pepsi Max, and Walkers.
Moreover, the Great British Spring Clean incorporates the Spring Clean Cymru in Wales (March 13-29) and Spring Clean Scotland in Scotland (March 13-April 24), ensuring a widespread effort in maintaining cleanliness and environmental protection across the regions.
