Following the Canada curling team’s victory over Team GB with a score of 9-5, BBC co-commentator Steve Cram has urged Winter Olympic officials to address the team’s use of inappropriate language. The Canadian team, led by Brad Jacobs, has been surrounded by controversy during the events in Milan and Cortina. This includes an incident where Canada’s Marc Kennedy engaged in a profanity-laden exchange with Swedish player Oskar Eriksson, prompting a public apology from the BBC.
Kennedy also faced scrutiny for an alleged double-touch of a stone during a match against Sweden, leading World Curling to issue a statement clarifying the rules. Despite this, the BBC commentators found themselves once again criticizing the Canadian team’s language.
During a break in the match, the Canadian team members were caught swearing on camera, causing disapproval from Cram and co-commentator Logan Gray. Cram audibly expressed his irritation after one team member exclaimed, “every f***ing time,” prompting him to call for action against the Canadians.
At the time of the incident, Canada was leading 3-1 after the third end, with crucial plays determining the outcome of the match. Despite Mouat’s Team GB securing two scoring stones, Jacobs’ team capitalized on the opportunity to score a point.
Following the loss to Canada, Team GB, led by Mouat, faces a challenging path to reach the semi-finals after suffering an 8-6 defeat against Norway. The upcoming matches against Canada and the USA carry significant weight, as a win in both games is crucial for securing a spot in the semi-final round.
Even with a victory against the USA, Team GB may still need favorable results from other matches to advance to the semi-finals.
