Sainsbury’s has decided to discontinue its Chop Chop rapid delivery app and merge its features into the main Sainsbury’s app for a more streamlined user experience. The Chop Chop service, launched in 2016, aimed to provide grocery deliveries within 60 minutes from 50 Sainsbury’s stores for a premium fee.
Users who previously accessed the standalone Chop Chop app may have noticed that it has been removed, redirecting them to the main Sainsbury’s app upon attempted download. Jim Banks, Sainsbury’s head of experience design, explained the decision on LinkedIn, stating that the consolidation aims to simplify the shopping process for customers.
The move was described as a significant advancement in simplifying Sainsbury’s ecosystem, enhancing the shopping experience by eliminating the need for customers to switch between apps. The integration effort involved collaboration from various teams in experience design, product development, and engineering.
Chop Chop, which rivaled Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, offered a competitive delivery time frame, although Tesco’s service can deliver food to customers in as little as 20 minutes. In other supermarket news in the UK, Co-op has announced the opening of 18 new or upgraded stores in the first quarter of 2026.
The inaugural Co-op store of 2026 will be located in the new neighborhood development of Willowbrook Park in Didcot, Oxfordshire. Furthermore, several stores are set to reopen after refurbishments, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London.
Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, emphasized the company’s focus on creating local stores that serve as community hubs and cater to the needs of residents. The stores prioritize quality products, value for customers, and promotional offers on sought-after items.
Co-op’s commitment extends to offering thousands of new apprenticeships in the upcoming years, with a £70 million investment through its Levy Share service to create 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030. This initiative aligns with Co-op’s strategy to enhance its presence in high streets and communities across the UK.
