Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo, known as the voice of the sport, has passed away at the age of 79. Virgo, who hailed from Salford, had a successful playing career and notably clinched the UK Championship title in 1979. He breathed his last in Spain, his residence, this Wednesday.
The sad news was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis, who expressed his sorrow on social media, announcing the loss of the great ‘JV’ John Virgo. Virgo’s family, including Rosie and Brooke-Leah, shared their grief, emphasizing Virgo’s passion for entertaining until the very end.
His iconic catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” solidified his status as a legendary figure in the sport. Virgo, who retired from playing in 1994, transitioned into a renowned commentator, earning a spot in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame three years ago. His flamboyant waistcoats and trick shots added to his charm and popularity among fans.
Apart from his contributions to snooker, Virgo co-hosted the BBC’s snooker program, Big Break, from 1991 to 2002 alongside Jim Davidson. Reflecting on their successful partnership, Virgo highlighted their unique chemistry despite their differing backgrounds and praised Davidson’s humor and generosity.
In 2020, Virgo and his wife, Rosie Ries, relocated to Spain in search of relief for his long-standing neck injury. He candidly discussed his gambling struggles in a 2017 interview with Mirror Sport. Survived by his son Gary and daughter Brook-Leah from previous marriages, Virgo leaves behind a lasting legacy in the snooker world.
