“UK Stands Firm Against Potential Annexation of Greenland”

The UK’s Foreign Secretary emphasized that the fate of Greenland rests solely in the hands of Greenlanders and Danes, excluding any external interference. Yvette Cooper addressed concerns in the Commons about the potential annexation of Greenland by Donald Trump, citing the US President’s mention of national security needs for the territory.

While the White House has hinted at interest in Greenland previously, Trump’s recent comments reignited the discussion following the US’s actions in Venezuela. Cooper reaffirmed that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and stressed the importance of European and NATO collaboration on security matters.

Supporting Denmark’s stance, Keir Starmer highlighted the UK’s solidarity with Denmark and rejected any claims by the US over Greenland. He echoed the sentiment that the decision regarding Greenland’s future belongs to the Greenlanders and Danes exclusively.

Former Tory Chancellor Jeremy Hunt cautioned against the potential annexation of Greenland, warning of severe repercussions for the NATO alliance. Hunt expressed concerns about the implications of such actions by Trump and stressed the need to preserve NATO’s unity.

Starmer also emphasized the necessity for Venezuela to undergo a peaceful transition to democracy swiftly, following recent US military involvement in the country. While asserting Maduro’s illegitimacy, Starmer underscored the Labour Party’s support for democracy in Venezuela.

Regarding the US operation in Venezuela, Cooper raised the issue of international law, emphasizing the need for the US to clarify its legal position. Downing Street confirmed that the safety of British citizens in Venezuela is a priority, advising them to stay put and review departure options cautiously.

The UK government instructed British nationals in Venezuela to maintain valid travel documents and identify a personal emergency plan independent of UK support. This guidance aims to ensure the safety and well-being of British citizens in Venezuela.
