A devastating fire erupted at a popular bar frequented by tourists in a Swiss ski resort, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries, as confirmed by authorities today.
Swiss police reported that approximately 40 individuals lost their lives, and around 100 sustained injuries during a New Year’s Eve celebration at Le Constellation bar in the resort town of Crans-Montana, according to a statement from the Italian Foreign Ministry.
The bar was packed with hundreds of people welcoming the New Year when the tragic incident unfolded, leading to the loss of several dozen lives. Authorities mentioned that international tourists are among the victims, as stated by the region’s security chief.
The fire is believed to have originated in the basement of the establishment around 1:30 am following an explosion. Emergency responders swiftly reacted to the situation, deploying 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 140 first responders to the scene.
Hospitals in the vicinity are overwhelmed, prompting the transfer of numerous patients to nearby medical facilities. Mathias Renard, the president of the state council, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized gratitude for the emergency services’ efforts during the tragic event.
Situated in the Swiss Alps, Crans-Montana attracts numerous holidaymakers due to its proximity to the Matterhorn, a renowned mountain peak. Police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion highlighted the international prominence of the ski resort, acknowledging the influx of tourists.
